The March walk is almost upon us and as promised there will be an option to travel by train. This will enable some post walk drinkies, for those that wish to, in 1 or both of the 2 pubs in Edale itself. Both have a great variety of real ales and food.

Walk Details

Distance: 12 Miles

Time: 5 to 6 hours including stops

The walk starts from the hamlet of Edale and rises, gently at first, up the spectacular valley of Grindsbrook Clough with some interesting climbing over boulders to emerge onto the southern flank of the remote Kinder Scout plateau. There are splendid views across the Vale of Edale and a sense of wilderness as the next stage skirts the head of the dale, passing some fascinatingly shaped gritstone boulders known as the "Wool Packs". The route then heads in a south westerly direction past "Pym Chair" to "Swine's Back" at the top of "Jacob's Ladder". There is an escape route from here descending "Jacob's Ladder" followed by an easy final stretch across the valley fields back to Edale.

The main route however continues in a southerly direction turning south eastwards over a stile and up across bleak open moorland to "Rushup Edge". Here the route turns eastwards and climbs steadily along the edge up to "Lord's Seat". There are again splendid views across and down the Vale of Edale. The route continues along the ridge and drops down to the foot of "Mam Tor". After a short section along the roadside the route follows a path northwards, gently descending down the hillside back to Edale for a well earned coffee or something stronger.

Although this is a fairly long walk it has only 1 steep ascent near the start. Most of the walk then follows the undulating hills around the Vale of Edale with a fairly gentle descent back into Edale.

Train Options

1. Frodsham to Edale

Depart Frodsham 07:25 Arrive Edale 09:29. Cost £15.30 or £9.95 if you have a railcard.

2. Warrington Bank Quay to Edale

Depart WBQ 07:39 arrive Edale 09:29. Cost £15.10 or £9.95 if you have a railcard.

3. Sankey to Edale

Depart Sankey 07:28 arrive Edale 09:29. Cost £15.10 or £9.95 if you have a railcard.

4. Liverpool South Parkway to Edale

Depart LSP 07:25 arrive Edale 09:29. Cost £19.10 or £12.60 if you have a railcard.

5. Liverpool Lime Street to Edale

Depart LLS 07:15 arrive Edale 09:29. Cost £19.10 or £12.60 if you have a railcard.

All train options have been arranged to connect with the 08:45 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield (stopping at Edale). For those wishing to travel by train we will meet under the electronic departure screens close to platform 1 at Manchester Piccadilly station.

Travelling by Car

It will take about an hour and 15 minutes to get to Edale. It is 50 miles from Runcorn to Edale costing around £12 in petrol for the round trip. Car parking is £5 for the day in Edale.

Walk will start from the car park at map reference SK124853. The car park is very close to the station but do not park in the station car park itself or you will end up with a ticket as it is for rail users only.

*An 8 peak challenge in the Ogwen Valley area in support of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and in memory of Bill Malloy. Teams of 4-6people enter. An entrance fee (£25) is required and all proceeds go to the mountain rescue.

The walk will take in the Drum, Foel Fras and Aber falls if there is time.

Estimated time is around 5 hours and the walk is doggable.

Sunday 8th January - Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog

The January walk will be on Sunday 8th January,
Starting at 1000 from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog.
Meet outside the Hand Hotel in the middle of the village. There is parking along the road into the village.
The walk will be 9-10 miles along the Ceiriog river and up into the nereby hills.
Last time I was there before Xmas it was pretty muddy and the rain hasnt let up, so good boots (preferably with gaiters) or wellingtons would be a good idea.
To get to Llanarmon leave the A483 at Chirk and follow the signs up the Ceiriog valley. It takes about 20 minutes from Chirk.
There is a 7 mile shorter version if the weather is bad or you just prefer a shorter walk after all that Xmas pudding.

Saturday 3rd December - Tryfan and Glyder Horseshoe

Forget the Christmas shopping, don't worry about the weather, just get out your wet and warm weather gear and join us for the Tryfan and Glyder horseshoe on SATURDAY 3rd DECEMBER.

We will meet at the layby nearest to the Milestone Buttress next to Lake Ogwen (Outdoor Leisure 17, GR 662603 on the A5(T) at 10.00am and will take the "traditional" scrambling route up Tryfan. We will stop on the top for lunch (weather permitting), and take 2 minutes silence there to remember our friend Bill Malloy. From there we drop down into the Bwlch Tryfan saddle, and up the Bristly Ridge scramble to the Glyder Plateau. After passing the Glyders and Cantilever (for a photo), we will decide whether we have time to include Y Garn or descend via the Devil's Kitchen to Cwm Idwal. the distance is probably only 6 or 7 miles, but plenty of scrambling and exposed rock. Definitely not doggable (unless your dog will fit in your rucksack) i'm afraid,

Sunday 6th November - Llyn Crafnant

Llyn Crafnant, Llyn Geirionydd and Llanrhychwyn Church

A 10 mile walk above the Conway valley, visiting 2 popular beautiful
scenic upland lakes enclosed by hills and mountains and returning via
the remote upland church said to be the oldest in Wales.
The route passes by the Fairy Falls then climbs steadily to cross the part
wooded slopes above Cwm Crafnant to follow an old tramway to Llyn
Geirionydd. The route crosses part wooded slopes down to Llyn Crafnant
following the lakeside path around to then climb up and over a forested
ridge back to Llyn Geirionydd . We follow a road then field paths to return
via Llanrhychwyn church.

The walk starts at 10:00hrs in the car park (opposite the woollen mill) in
Trefriw (SH 782630.)

Sunday 9th October - The Howgills

Sorry to mess you about but have had to postpone this again (this was originally Saturday October 1st)

Walk details:

A trip to the Howgills, driving along a disused railway line just to get to the start !

Nice, easy walk - total distance about 13 km; height gain about 350 metres.

Highlights include visiting the (alleged) source of the Lune, passing through the village associated with Elizabeth Gaunt (the last woman to be burned at the stake) and a short trip along the coast-to-coast path - what else could you possibly wish for !

A pub at the end of the walk perhaps - well there's one of them as well !

Start in Ravenstonedale at 10:00am.

M6 Junction 38 for A685/B6260 (Brough/Appleby).

At roundabout shortly after motorway exit, continue east onto A685 (Sedbergh).

Ravenstonedale exit is on the right about 6 miles further on, just after Newbiggin-on-Lune.

Head into the village and park on the right, outside the school - there is ample parking.

Sunday 4th September - Cader Idris, Snowdonia

The next walk will be on Sunday 4th September starting at 10 am. It will be a gentle stroll up and down Cadair Idris utilising the Pony Track at least for the descent but a circular route is possible. (Final details still to be checked out..)

Start at the car park GR 699153 on OS Explorer Map OL23.

This is about 3 miles south west of the centre of Dolgellau. Entering Dolgellau from the north, trend up and to the left through the town and there is an oblique junction (L) signed "Cader Idris". The car park is 2.5 miles from this point, on the right. Pay and Display £4 for the day. The car park is quite small but I checked it out at 10.30 on a Saturday and there was only one car there, so should be fine.

About 4 - 5 hours comfortably and 719 metres of ascent/descent.

Sunday 4th September - Cader Idris, Snowdonia

September's walk will be on Sunday 4th September (not 11th September as originally planned on the walks list). The walk will be on Cader Idris to the south of Snowdonia. There are two possible routes and I need to check on car parking for the second possibility before committing to a start point. The walk will start as usual at 10 am. Final details will appear here in a week or two.

GET YOUR BOOTS ON AND MEET THE IMechE PRESIDENT!

The President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers extends a warm welcome to members to meet him on the highest mountain peaks in the country during his presidential year.
The first such occasion will be on the summit of Scafell Pike on Sunday 26 June, when, rain or shine, he will greet members at the summit cairn from 1300 to 1430. Please note that members take part in the ascent of Scafell Pike at their own risk.
See you then!
Dates and times for the other peaks will be announced later.

Sunday 5th June 2011 - Lake District

Lake District - Walk on the Far Eastern Fells around Hartsop (Wainwright Book Two)
Start: Brotherswater Inn, foot of Kirkstone Pass (NY 403 118), 10 am (Breakfasts served from 8am - 9.30am)

Car parking is available at pub is £2.50 per day.

Location: Brotherswater Inn is located on the A592 (Kirkstone Pass road), next to Sykeside Camp site.
Leave M6 @ Junction 36 (South Lakes), follow A591 to Windermere. Through Windermere, at (very) small roundabout, turn right to follow the A592 through Troutbeck, past the pub at the top of the Kirkstone Pass, then descend towards Patterdale. The Brotherswater Inn is on your left.
Route: From Brotherswater Inn, follow path to Hartsop Village , then climb steadily on good path to Hayeswater Reservoir. Continue over grass climbing to The Knott (2423’). Then over rough grass to the summit of Rest Dodd (2283’). (May see the Bannerdale Red Deer herd on the eastern slopes).
Descend over grass towards Satura Crag (Wainwright baggers can make slight detour to Brock Crags (1842’) if they want) then follow clear path to Angle Tarn. (nice place for lunch). Short rise on clear path to Angletarn Pikes (1857’), then follow path onwards to Boredale Hause. Descend to Hartsop Village , then return along outward route to Brotherswater Inn.
Distance: Approx 9 miles
Time: Approx 5½ hours
Height Gain: Approx 2370 feet

Saturday 7th May 2011 - Bollington (near Macclesfield)

The walk starts from Bollington (near Macclesfield) at the car park GR 931781 between the Macclesfield Canal and Middlewod Way, 10 am.
We follow the canal and pass over into Lyme Park before climbing up onto Bowstones and Sponds Hill. Good views on a clear day of the Cheshire plains and Manchester, together with the Peak District. We then head down towards Rainow and return along Kerridge Hill and White Nancy into Bollington.

About 11 miles, 1000ft ascent.

Sunday 10th April 2011 - The Moel Hebog Ridge.

This includes Moel Hebog(Bare hill of the falcon), Moel yr Ogof (Bare hill of the cave) [Owain Glyndwr's cave] and Moel Lefn (Smooth bare Hill).
We will climb up from Beddgelert, having parked to the right of the Royal Goat Hotel. Ascending Moel Hebog 2569ft by a path which is grassy initially before becoming stoney and a bit of a scramble.(Volcanic bombs on view here). From the trig point views of Cnicht, Tremadoc and the Lleyn Peninsula. Following the ridge to Moel yr Ogaf we will pass close the Owain Glyndwr's refuge from Henry 1V close to an old asbestos mine, which apparently is more accessible than the cave. We will continue along the ridge to Moel Lefn. From here one may observe the Jubilee Tower on the Nantlle Ridge. From here we will descend to Bwlch Sais (Englishman's Pass) and past the Princess Quarry into The Beddgelert Forest, Llyn Llywelyn on our left until we reach the bridleway and continue our return to Beddgelert.

The walk is about 5/6 miles. and will take about 5 hours. It is lambing time so not sure about dogs.
Please meet at the car park to the right of The Royal Goat Hotel (Cost £4 per day - no facilities) at 10am. Having taken the Capel Curig road to Beddgelert, turn left, taking Portmadoc road over the bridge in Beddgelert. The Royal Goat is just a couple of hundred yards after that on the right hand side.GR. 588 481.

Club name change

It was agreed to change the name of the club to the Elanco Walking and Mountaineering Club in view of the changes to the site funding the club. Founder members of the Dista Mountaineering club who were present agreed to the change.

Mission statement

The social committee has requested that each club that it funds produce a mission statement. It was agreed that Karen would present the mission statement to the committee.

“The Dista Walking Club is a group of like minded people of mixed ages and experience who organise walking & climbing in the hills and mountains of the UK and beyond. It is a relaxed and friendly group willing to share experience and expertise at all levels, with safety & fun being a priority.”

Communications

There was some discussion of the value of maintaining the website and it was suggested that a blog site may be an alternative. However, none of those present felt knowledgeable enough to take an action to set up such a site. Tony Bent offered to liaise with Andrew Malloy to look into an IT solution.

Equipment and funding

No additional equipment is required at the moment, although we may need to renew ropes at a future date. An equipment inventory will be done for the Italy trip to ensure everyone has the necessary safety equipment.

It was agreed to spend funds on the use of mountain huts, possible minibus hire for the Oggie 8 challenge and possible affiliation to the British Mountaineering Council (Mal to investigate).

Italy trip

Fifteen people have booked. Dave Pearcey to book 4 cars. Tony Bent to book the mountain hut. Those attempting the Gran Paradiso peaks will require ice axe, crampons, rope, slings, karabiners and helmet. The route is PD- on account of some rock work near the summit. Those going only as far as the hut require only standard walking gear. There is an alternative route down from the hut contouring via a second hut. There are lots of sightseeing and water sports activities for days off.

Yorkshire Dales Saturday 5th March 2011

The March walk will be in the Yorkshire Dales and is from Settle on Saturday 5^th March 2011 starting at 1000.

Meet at the pay and display car park on the north side of the town. If your are travelling from Skipton it is on the left hand side just after you pass the main square and have gone through where the main road narrows..Grid ref. 81910 / 63820 You can park on the road adjacent to the church which is opposite the car park entrance. There are toilets available in the car park.

The distance is about 9.5 mile with the highest point being Jubilee Cave at 420m.

The walk starts from the market square and quickly heads onto fells to give views of Ribblesdale and Penyghent on the sky line. The first stop is at Catrigg Force waterfall. We then head towards Attermire Scar where there are several caves we can visit and stop for lunch. The caves include Jubilee Cave, Victoria Cave and Attermire Cave. On our way back we can also visit Scalebor Force waterfall.

Last Saturday Andrew and I found a nice pub with a log fire to finish the walk. Unfortunately I was the driver.
