Saturday 12th May 2012 - Dovestones and Saddleworth Moors walk

Start location: Off the A635 Manchester to Marsden road, park at Dovestones Reservoir car park. GR SE013034. The turn is signposted on the right hand side (sign behind a tree!) about 1/3 of a mile up the A635 hill from the roundabout at the end of Greenfield, heading towards Marsden.

Start time 10:00 a.m. (Note it is quite a slow run from the M60 ~ ½ hr in bad traffic / lights against you).

Distance: 9 miles, 1500ft ascent.

Walk is doggable, though the lower open enclosures had a lot of lambs present during the reccee so lead may be needed.

Starting at Dovestones Reservoir we climb past two further reservoirs under the escarpments of the Saddleworth Moors. We climb up Birchin Clough past a number of attractive waterfalls and waterslides, with some mild scrambling depending upon the water levels, which can be bypassed on a higher level path. We then progress around the escarpments we saw from the valley, with views over Manchester and Oldham before getting to the Chew Reservoir road which descends back to our start point. Moors were slightly boggy to say the least!
