Saturday 1st February 2025 - Rivington Pike and Yarrow Reservoir

Hi All

Jackie and I are down to do the February walk and the intended route takes in Rivington Pike and Yarrow Reservoir on Saturday 1 Feb, meeting at 10am. Something a bit closer to home for a change. Approximately 8 miles long with 330m of ascent. Generally good footpaths though it can be boggy in places.

Meet at the Great House Barn tea room (which also provides a good finishing watering hole) – grid ref SD 628 139, What3words “mistress.trash.impressed” (hey, I just read them out, don’t blame me – at least its memorable). There is plenty of free parking there, or on the road opposite which leads up to Rivington Hall Barn, as well as free toilets.

The route goes from there down to Liverpool Castle on the shore of the reservoir before climbing up through Lever Park via the Japanese Gardens to Rivington Pike itself. The views there when we did the recce were excellent, though windy. Be prepared for inclement weather on the tops. From there we go cross-country to Noon Hill before dropping down from the moors through farmland to pick up a track that takes us past old lead mining to Yarrow reservoir (there is also an optional short excursion to a memorial on the hill for the crew of a Wellingon bomber that crashed on the hill in 1943). Then a short section on road before skirting round the reservoir on good tracks that take us back to the start point. A lot of interest points and old buildings, particularly in the first part.

Hope to see you there.

Iain and Jackie
