Saturday 1st December 2018 - Carlingill

This month's walk takes us to the Howgills and the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, following the old county boundary of the West Riding (something our older readers may remember).

The walk begins alongside Carlin Gill and eventually turns towards a delightful gill, passing a series of waterfalls. Once out of the gill, we will make our way up onto the moor and a wonderful path with excellent views across to the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. We return via a number of farms beside Howgill Lane and then the Roman road of Fair Mile.

The walk is about 8 miles long with a height gain of less than 500 metres; a relatively easy walk and suitable for this time of the year - it shouldn't take much more than 4 hours, without stops.

Start location:   Carlingill Bridge (624 996).
The best way to get there is by leaving the M6 at junction 38 Tebay, taking the A685 south for Kendal, through Tebay (which has a lovely pub for post-walk drinks).
After less than 2.5miles, take the road on the left to the farm at Low Borrowbridge. Carlingill Bridge is reached along the narrow road, about 1 mile further south.

There is (free) parking on the west side of the hill, south of the bridge.

As usual, let's aim to start at 10 a.m.

Please let me know if you are coming along.

Cheers, Tony
