This walk is a classic circular high level walk in the Lakes. It is quite challenging at about 9 miles and about 1500ft of ascent, so we will need prepare for all eventualities of winter weather, and will need to set off from Braithwaite no later than 10am. It takes about 2 hours to drive to Braithwaite, so will need to set off soon after 7.30 am. Plan to meet in front of the Ivy House Hotel (Green building in the centre of the village). Weekend parking is usually available in front of St Herberts church and school on Thornthwaite Rd (on the right opposite the Royal Oak pub as you get into Braithwaite).
The walk is not really suitable for dogs (sorry!) as there are some steep slopes and scree to deal with. We will follow the classic anti-clockwise route (see map below) with a couple of short cuts included (eg will probably miss out Grasmoor). In case of bad weather or lack of time the valley floor offers an escape route near Coledale Beck. Hopefully we should finish between 4 and 5 pm.
I have reserved the last 4 rooms in the Ivy House Hotel in Braithwaite, for Bed & Breakfast on Saturday night (with option for a second night if required), and intend to book a table for dinner at the hotel restaurant for those staying on Saturday night. There is one twin room still left for the Saturday night at £69.50 for 2 people B&B; first come first served. If no one contacts me by next week about this room, I will try and un-reserve it.
Please let me know if you wish to join the walk. I’m looking forward to it as it’s a new one for me. Hope to see you there !
