Sunday 14th June - LLYN COWLYD - EASTERN CARNEDDAU

WALK TO LLYN COWLYD - EASTERN CARNEDDAU
Date - Sunday 14th June 2015
Location - Capel Curig - free parking behind Pinnacle Cafe/Joe Browns 720.582 (with facilities)
Distance- 9 miles
Time- 10am

This area of Snowdonia is attractive for its beautiful scenery, lack of crowds and excellent views of surrounding mountains such as Tryfan, Snowdon Massif, Pen Y ole Wen, and especially Pen Llithrig y Wrach (the hill of the slippery witch! - this just had to be included). Lots here of historical and geological interest.
Lyn Cowlyd is the deepest lake in Wales and the probable focus of drovers roads and packhorse trails. It is a reservoir which serves Conway.
The walk begins by crossing the A5 from car parking and follow a footpath past the building opposite which  was once a church. The track follows the route towards Llyn Crafnant where we fork left for the ascent of Crimpiau. We descend to the col crossing rough ground to ascend Craig Wen. We descend once more and cross over rough ground to reach Creigiau Gleision, a ridge overlooking Llyn Colwyd. We then drop down to the dam and cross on the footpath, turning left to follow the path on the far side of the lake.
No picnic tables here but a very pleasant place for lunch. The valley retains its alpine flora and I heard cuckoos!
The return route is a gentle amble down quite boggy ground back to Capel Curig (possibly last half mile along the A5 but am still recceing.
Good boots and gaiters are required but this is a lovely walk.
It would be nice to know if you are able to join me. Please phone 07876294147 or 0151 353 8070
