Saturday 3rd June 2017 - Fountains Fell and Darnbrook Fell

A pleasant 8 mile circuit starting at the southern end of Pen-y-ghent and climbing anti-clockwise onto Fountains Fell, named after Fountains Abbey, whose monks, the founders of Yorkshire’s wool trade, used this fell as one of their sheepwalks in the thirteenth century. The fell is the only 2000ft summit to have had a coal mine on its top – long since closed. It does have its own tarn as well, which is more aesthetically pleasing … and has a sandy beach (no need to bring swimwear though!).
We then head north-east across open moorland to the top of Darnbrook Fell, which overlooks the quiet hamlet of Litton. Some may remember that we walked to Pen-y-ghent via Plover Hill from Litton a number of years ago.

Finally, we descend to the north to reach a track which we use to return to our start point. We used this track in the opposite direction all those years ago on the Plover Hill walk.

Time: Aim to start at 10am

Starting point: GR 843715 - 5 miles north of Settle on the minor road to Littondale (via Langcliffe and Stainforth); roadside parking area.  It’s the point at which the Pennine Way turns off the road towards Pen-y-ghent. I have attached a map of the walk and marked the parking area with an asterisk (just above Rainscar farm).
