Meeting – Pystyll Gwyn Quarry car park – it is free! (Grid Ref – SJ – 188/573)
Time – Meet 10am for a 10:15am start
Location – Take the A494 towards Ruthin from Mold direction, just after the Druid Inn pub Llanferres, take a left onto the B5430 signed for Llanarmon-yn-lal, the car park is about 1.5 miles on the left. It is not signed so look out for it!
The journey time for most of us will be around an hour.
The walk – Approximately 11miles and 2,200ft of ascent on a mix of field paths, tracks, bridleways and some road.
The walk will initially go south towards the small village of Llanarmon-yn-lal, then heading SW to Llyn Gweryd and then onto the Offas Dyke path heading north. We than stay on the Offas Dyke all the way to Foel Fenlli crossing the A494 by the Clwyd Gate Motel (now closed). We can miss out summiting Foel Fenlli if the weather is not good or time is against us. Next we head in an easterly direction and cross the A494, and work our way south back to the car park.
The walk is fine for dogs, but must be kept on a lead through farm fields, lambing season is upon us. Expect mud in places especially after rain.
For lunch we will find a sheltered spot somewhere on the Offas Dyke, at the end of the walk we can visit the Raven inn in Llanarmon-yn-lal for a well-earned brew/beer. This is an area that is relatively quiet this time of year, in fact on my recce I did not see one person, which is unusual.
