Sunday 4th July 2021 - Hardcastle Crags

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since we last posted a walk, but hopefully you have all been keeping safe and well.

The July walk has been chosen by my grandson Owen, and it starts from the NT car park (free for members and toilets available) about 2 miles north of Hebden Bridge (GR 988292; Outdoor leisure 21; South Pennines). This is about 45 miles or an hours’ drive from Warrington depending on traffic, and we plan to arrive by 9.45 and start walking about 10 am.

The walk starts by walking west and north passing Gibson Mill and mill pond, (see map https://www.theaa.com/images/travel/maps/walks/W_Yorks_Walks_Map43.gif).

After passing Hardcastle Crags, there is an option for fitter walkers to add a couple of miles by following the Hebden Dale valley west to turn at Blake Dean. The walk then turns east at Walshaw where there is an opportunity to gain some height. Keener walkers can also detour slightly here (about a mile extra) to scale Turn Hill (elevation about 1000ft) then re-joining the group to view Lumb Bridge waterfalls before returning south to the car park along Crimsworth Dean Beck. Without added detours, the route is just over 5 miles and very suitable for dogs. We should finish about 2.30 allowing time to visit a hostelry or tea room in Hebden Bridge on the way home,

If you’d like to join, please Email Alan (spreadbury.as[at]gmail.com) in good time so we know how many to expect !

Thanks,

Owen and Alan
